Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2022, Volume 16, Issue 8,   Pages 1224-1236 doi: 10.1007/s11705-022-2139-1

Abstract: Ordered SBA-15 mesoporous silica with incorporated titanium was successfully synthesized via a one-potThe results showed that titanium was successfully incorporated into the mesoporous silica framework witha limited amount of titanium (Si/Ti > 20), and the mesoporous structure was retained. However, the increased titanium content inevitably resulted in the formation of anatase TiO 2titanium strengthened the interactions between cobalt species and supports

ENHANCING RAINFALL-RUNOFF POLLUTION MODELING BY INCORPORATION OF NEGLECTED PHYSICAL PROCESSES

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2023, Volume 10, Issue 4,   Pages 553-565 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2023519

Abstract:

The growing need to mitigate rainfall-runoff pollution, especially first flush, calls for accurate quantification of pollution load and the refined understanding of its spatial-temporal variation. The wash-off model has advantages in modeling rainfall-runoff pollution due to the inclusion of two key physical processes, build-up and wash-off. However, this disregards pollution load from wet precipitation and the relationship between rainfall and runoff, leading to uncertainties in model outputs. This study integrated the Soil Conservation Service curve number (SCS-CN) into the wash-off model and added pollutant load from wet precipitation to enhance the rainfall-runoff pollution modeling. The enhanced wash-off model was validated in a typical rural-residential area. The results showed that the model performed better than the established wash-off model and the commonly-used event mean concentrations method, and identified two different modes of pollution characteristics dominated by land pollution and rainfall pollution, respectively. In addition, the model simulated more accurate pollutant concentrations at high-temporal-resolution. From this, it was found that 12% of the total runoff contained 80% to 95% of the total load for chemical oxygen demand, total N, and total P, whereas it contained only 15% of the total load for NH4+-N. The enhanced model can provide deeper insights into non-point pollution mitigation.

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2012, Volume 6, Issue 3,   Pages 253-258 doi: 10.1007/s11705-012-0902-4

Abstract: The effect of iridium and iron impregnation of HZSM-5 zeolite on the methanol to propylene reaction (MTP) was investigated. The selectivities of propylene and other hydrocarbons, and the conversion of methanol were compared by performing MTP in a small pilot plant. The results indicate that HZSM-5 zeolite modified by iron and iridium increased propylene selectivity by 6.3% and 8%, respectively. The selectivity of propylene was higher for Ir/H-ZSM-5 than for Fe/H-ZSM-5, where Fe/H-ZSM-5 was more stable than Ir/H-ZSM-5. Analytic techniques, including X-ray diffraction, BET surface area, temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, were used to characterize the modified zeolites as well as the parent zeolites.

Removal of fluoride from water using titanium-based adsorbents

Zhijian LI, Shubo DENG, Xueying ZHANG, Wei ZHOU, Jun HUANG, Gang YU

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2010, Volume 4, Issue 4,   Pages 414-420 doi: 10.1007/s11783-010-0241-y

Abstract: Three adsorbents including TiO , Ti-Ce, and Ti-La hybrid oxides were prepared to remove fluoride from aqueous solution. The Ti-Ce and Ti-La hybrid adsorbents obtained by the hydrolysis-precipitation method had much higher sorption capacity for fluoride than the TiO adsorbent prepared through hydrolysis. Rare earth (Ce and La) oxides and TiO exhibited a synergistic effect in the hybrid adsorbents for fluoride sorption. The sorption equilibrium of fluoride on the three adsorbents was achieved within 4 h, and the pseudo-second-order model described the sorption kinetics well. The sorption isotherms fitted the Langmuir model well, and the adsorption capacities of fluoride on the Ti-Ce and Ti-La adsorbents were about 9.6 and 15.1 mg·g , respectively, at the equilibrium fluoride concentration of 1.0 mg·L , much higher than the 1.7 mg·g on the TiO . The sorption capacities of fluoride on the three adsorbents decreased significantly when the solution pH increased from 3 to 9.5. The electrostatic interaction played an important role in fluoride removal by the three adsorbents, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis indicated that the hydroxyl groups on the adsorbent surface were involved in fluoride adsorption.

Abstract: In this study, TiO functionalized with organic groups were prepared to study the effect of carboxyl and amino groups on the adsorption behavior of TiO for the removal of acid red G (ARG) as an anionic dye from aqueous solution. TiO was successfully modified with carboxyl and amino groups by using the hydrolysis method with oxalic acid (OAD, with two carboxyl groups), ethylenediamine (EDA, with two amino groups) and DL-alanine (DLA, with one carboxyl group and one amino group) at low temperature (65 °C) and labeled as OAD-TiO , EDA-TiO and DLA-TiO , respectively. The ARG uptake by the functionalized TiO samples was largely dependent on the functional groups. The interaction between ARG and the functional organic groups on the TiO samples plays an important role in the adsorption process, which leads to the excellent adsorption performance (higher capacity and faster adsorption rate) of the functionalized TiO samples than that of P25 (commercial TiO without modification). Furthermore, there is no obvious loss of the adsorption capacity for the functionalized TiO even after 5 adsorption-desorption cycles, which indicated the good reusability of the modified TiO samples for anionic dye removal from aqueous solution.
